Following updated advice from government, Gloucestershire’s two largest Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) will reopen on Monday 11th May 2020 for pre-booked visits with strict social distancing measures in place.
All HRCs have been closed since Tuesday 24 March as part of the lock down in response to Coronavirus.
From Monday 11th May the two largest sites in the county at Hempsted in Gloucester and Wingmoor Farm at Stoke Orchard will re-open for essential visits only and all trips will need to be booked in advance.
The latest government guidance makes it clear that residents should only take waste to a HRC if it cannot be stored safely at home and no alternative disposal options are available. Hempsted and Wingmoor will open first because their large size and long access roads allow for traffic to be more easily controlled.
Social distancing measures at 2m will be strictly enforced to help keep visitors and staff safe and crucially anyone with covid-19 symptoms and those in self-isolating households MUST NOT visit.
To limit the number of people on-site a set number of booking slots will be made available and vehicles should only have drivers wherever possible – a maximum of one passenger is permitted if you need help to unload your waste and recycling.
The booking system has a limited number of timed slots available each day for visitors to select and only a 7 day window will be available to book at any one time. Bookings can only be made online.
Visitors are asked to only bring to site what they can safely unload themselves as site staff need to social distance so will not be able to help with unloading.

Once the initial trial is completed, the council hopes to open further recycling centres across the county in the coming weeks; meanwhile it will be keeping the operating arrangements under review.
Everyone should keep using their kerbside waste collection service, which the local councils have worked hard to keep running, for recycling, garden and food waste and general waste.

Tewkesbury Borough Council will start taking bookings for its bulky waste collection service from Monday 11 May.
The announcement comes a week after the garden waste collection service was reinstated. Both services have been affected by staff shortages due to the coronavirus pandemic, but now that staffing levels have become more stable, the two services are back up and running again.
Customers who would like a bulky item collected from their home can call the council from Monday to arrange it.
Customers are asked to only book a collection if the household has been clear of Covid-19 symptoms for at least two weeks – this is to limit any spread of the virus and to safeguard the collection crews’ health and well being. If symptoms in the household appear after booking a collection, customers must call the council to rearrange it for two weeks after the last day of symptoms.
